Heading north, the course goes along the Tejo river on the direction of the most difficult part of the race, the "Serra d'Aire e Candeeiros". The first 80 km won't give many problems to the riders since it's almost flat, but when we hit that point the carnage will start.
This region in Portugal is known for its short, but very steep climbs which will be ideal for a brave puncheur to attack. Climbs such as the "Portela do Pereiro", "Portela do Vale de Espinho" and "Serra de Santo António" are trully hard with slopes around 12%. The problem is that when we leave this climbs, the riders will have 40 km still to ride.
On the approach to the end in Peniche, riders will pass through the medieval town of Óbidos who will also mark the start of the most decisive part of the race, the "Casais de Navalha" climb. 4 km with slopes of 12% (maxing out at 20%) will be the ideal place for a late attack. With just 10km to go, the riders will need to keep the pace high to cross the line and win in Peniche. Time for surfing on the "Supertubos" beach?
